Arusha, 22 March 2022: A delegation of the Court of Justice of the West African Economic and Monetary Union, led by its President Honourable Daniel Amagoin Tessougue, is visiting the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights to familiarise with the Arusha-based Court’s activities and meet key officials.
The delegation is expected to exchange experiences with their hosts on best practices and how to deepen cooperation between the two courts.
The President of the African Court Honourable Lady Justice Imani Daud Aboud said: ‘’The visit will strengthen judicial cooperation and share best practices between the two courts.’’
The visitors will also attend the delivery of the African Court’s Judgments on Thursday, 24 March 2022. During the four-day visit, the visiting delegation will also pay courtesy calls to the East African Court of Justice, the UN-International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals, the Pan African Lawyers Union, the Coalition for an Effective African Court and the East African Law Society.

1.The African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights was established by virtue of Article 1 of the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights on the Establishment of an African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights, to complement the protective mandate of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, with a view to enhancing the protection of human rights on the Continent.
2. The West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU) was established when the CFA was devalued in order to ensure coherent monetary and economic policy among the states of the CFA zone. The Court of Justice is mandated to ensure the respect of the Treaty relating to its application and interpretation.
