As part of the ongoing activities commemorating 20 years of protecting human and peoples’ rights in Africa, Judge of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights, Hon. Lady Justice Stella Anukam on 2 May 2026, delivered a Public Lecture at Veritas University in Abuja, Nigeria.
The Lecture formed part of the Court’s Anniversary Public Lecture Series being implemented by its Judges across African Union Member States to promote awareness and understanding of the African human rights system and the role of the Court in advancing justice on the continent.

During the engagement, Hon. Justice Anukam shared insights on the mandate and jurisprudence of the Court, emphasizing that the Court exists to protect the rights of African citizens and peoples across the continent.
She further encouraged students, academics, legal practitioners and the wider public to make use of the African human rights system, stressing that the Court is open and accessible to Africans and serves as an important continental mechanism for the protection of human and peoples’ rights.
The Lecture also provided an opportunity for dialogue and interaction with students and members of academia on the role of the Court in strengthening access to justice, accountability and human rights protection in Africa.
To further mark the Court’s 20th anniversary celebrations and encourage continued engagement, Hon. Justice Anukam also distributed anniversary-branded souvenirs to participants during the event.
