AFRICAN COURT ON HUMAN AND PEOPLES’ RIGHTS TO CONVENE THE 74TH ORDINARY SESSION, 2-27 SEPTEMBER 2024

SUMMARIES OF JUDGMENTS DELIVERED BY THE AFRICAN COURT ON 4TH JUNE 2024 AT ITS 73RD ORDINARY SESSION

Arusha, 26 August 2024: The African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights will hold its 74th Ordinary Session from 2 to 27 September 2024 at the Seat of the Court in Arusha, the United Republic of Tanzania. During the session, the Court will hold a series of significant events.

On Monday 2 September 2024, the Court will hold the formal swearing-in ceremony of Hon Justice Duncan Gaswaga, the newly elected Judge of the African Court.

On Tuesday 3 September 2024, the Court will deliver five (5) judgments in the following cases:

  1. Application No. 015/2016 – Habyalimana Augustino and Another v United Republic of Tanzania
  2. Application No. 017/2018 – Dadu Sumano Kilagela v United Republic of Tanzania
  3. Application No. 021/2018 – Boukary Waliss v Republic of Benin
  4. Application No. 016/2019 – Lompo Bahanla v Burkina Faso
  5. Application No. 009/2023 – Safinaz Ben Ali and Lamya El-Jendoubi v Republic of Tunisia 

On Tuesday 10 September 2024, the Court will hold a Public Hearing in Application No. 019/2018 – Centre for Human Rights and Others v United Republic of Tanzania.

The swearing-in ceremony, delivery of judgments and public hearing will all commence at 10:00AM (EAT) and will be accessible via live streaming in both English and French on the following links:

For the Public Hearing, simultaneous interpretation will be available in Arabic, English, French and Kiswahili.

During the 74th Ordinary Session, the Court will also consider fifteen (15) applications and deal with administrative matters.

The Court will also receive a delegation from the Pan-African Parliament (PAP), a legislative body of the African Union based in Midrand – South Africa, for a two-day working visit aimed at enhancing collaboration and synergy between the two AU Organs.

NOTES FOR EDITORS:

  1. The African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights (AfCHPR) is a continental court established by African Union Member States to ensure the protection of human and peoples’ rights in Africa. The Court is an organ of the African Union and it complements and reinforces the functions of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights.
  2. The Court is composed of eleven Judges, nationals of Member States of the African Union elected in their individual capacity. The Court meets four times a year in Ordinary Sessions and may hold Extra-Ordinary Sessions.
  3. The Court’s mandate includes hearing cases and disputes concerning the interpretation and application of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, as well as any other human rights instrument ratified by the concerned States.
  4. Members of the media are invited to cover these events. Media personnel are encouraged to register in advance to secure accreditation.
