Arusha, 14 April, 2021: The Registry Staff of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights and their counterparts at the Inter-American Court for Human Rights will hold their biannual meeting today.
According to the Registrar of the African Court, Dr Robert Eno, the two Courts will discuss their recent case law developments and also brainstorm on the challenges they are facing in the dispensation and implementation of their respective decisions, among others.
He added: ‘’ Sharing of our common judicial knowledge helps to improve our quality of work and for protection of human rights in our two continents.’’

1. The African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights (the Court) is a continental court established by African countries to ensure the protection of human and peoples’ rights in Africa. It complements and reinforces the functions of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights.
The Court was established by pursuant to Article 1 of the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights on the Establishment of an African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights, (the Protocol) which was adopted by Member States of the then Organization of African Unity (OAU) in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, in June 1998. The Protocol came into force on 25 January 2004.
2. The Inter-American Court of Human Rights is one of two bodies established by the Organization of American States to monitor human rights in the Americas. The Court was created by Article 33b of the American Convention on Human Rights to safeguard the rights enshrined in the Convention. It is based in San José, Costa Rica.
