SIXTH AFRICAN UNION JUDICIAL DIALOGUE: OPENING CEREMONY THIS MONDAY 20 NOVEMBER 2023 IN ALGIERS

SIXTH AFRICAN UNION JUDICIAL DIALOGUE: OPENING CEREMONY THIS MONDAY 20 NOVEMBER 2023 IN ALGIERS

Algiers, 20 November 2023: The Sixth African Union Judicial Dialogue will be held from 20 to 22 November 2023 in Algiers, People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria. Devoted to the promotion of human rights and the effective administration of justice in Africa, this event will bring together judges from national and regional jurisdictions, representatives of national judicial systems, as well as legal experts and practitioners.

This year’s general theme is “Promoting Human Rights in Africa:

Challenges and Opportunities of Transposing Regional and International Human Rights Jurisprudence into National Jurisdictions”. This theme underlines the importance of consistency and convergence in interpreting regional and international human rights standards at national level.

The Dialogue will equally focus on the 20th anniversary of the Maputo Protocol to celebrate the progress made in protecting women’s rights in Africa. The Dialogue participants will also discuss the importance of social, economic and cultural rights and their promotion and protection at the national level.

NOTES FOR EDITORS

  1. The first Judicial Dialogue was held in Arusha, Tanzania, in November 2013.
  2. The Court was established pursuant to Article 1 of the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights on the Establishment of an African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights. The Protocol was adopted on 9 June 1998 in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso and entered into force on 25 January 2004.

The Court’s mandate is to complement and strengthen the functions of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, which is a quasi-judicial organ of the African Union. It is responsible for monitoring the implementation of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

  • The Court is composed of 11 judges, nationals of the Member States of the African Union, elected as individuals.
  •  The Court meets four times a year in ordinary sessions and may hold extraordinary sessions.
