On the occasion of International Women’s Day, the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights joins the global community in celebrating the achievements, resilience and leadership of women across Africa.
As the Court marks the 20th Anniversary of its establishment (2006-2026), we are reminded of the importance of continuing to strengthen the protection of women’s rights across the continent, including those guaranteed under the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa, adopted in Maputo in 2003.
This year’s theme, “Give to Gain,” calls on all of us to recognise that when we invest in the empowerment, protection and advancement of women and girls, society as a whole benefits.
The African Court, through its jurisprudence, demonstrates its commitment to respecting women’s rights and observing the Maputo Protocol, which prohibits all forms of violence against women.
May this day inspire renewed commitment to advancing the rights and opportunities of women and girls across our continent.
