Arusha, 22 March 2021: About 200 stakeholders have confirmed to participate in the one-day virtual validation workshop to fine tune the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights five year Strategic Plan (2021-2025) tomorrow, 23 March 2021.
’The objective of the external validation is to further enrich the Plan in realising the mission and vision of the Court,’’
said the President of the Court, Hon Justice Sylvain Oré.
The participants include representatives of the Member States of the African Union; Members of the African Governance Architecture (AGA) platform; Representatives of the African Union Commission; Judges and Staff of the Court; National Courts; Parliament; Academia; African International Courts; Bar Associations; African International Organizations; National Human Rights Institutions; International Organisations, Media and Civil Society Organisations, among others.

1. Before 2012, the Court operated with annual work plans. In 2012, the Court adopted its first strategic plan that ran from 2012 to 2015. In 2016, the Court adopted its second strategic plan running from 2016 to 2020. The 2016-2020 Strategic Plan of the Court came to an end in December 2020.
The 5 year plan described the vision, mission and core values of the Court, and set out the key strategic goals to be attained over that period. The plan identified (4) four priority areas of focus namely: Enhancement of Judicial Procedure; Outreach and Cooperation; Development of Institutional Capacity and Sustainable Financing.
2. The African Court was established by virtue of Article 1 of the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights on the Establishment of an African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights, to complement the protective mandate of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, with a view to enhancing the protection of human rights on the continent.
3. The Protocol was adopted on 9 June 1998 in Burkina Faso and came into force on 25 January 2004.The Court officially started its operations in November 2006 initially in Addis Ababa and a year later moved to its permanent seat in Arusha, Tanzania.
