On this International Women’s Day, the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights reaffirms its commitment to protecting women’s rights and ensuring gender equality across the continent.
The African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa, commonly known as the Maputo Protocol provide a strong foundation — but true equality requires action from all of us.
This year’s global theme, “Accelerating Action Towards Gender Equality” urges us to intensify efforts to break barriers and advance women’s rights.
In alignment with the African Union’s 2025 theme, “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations,” and the African Court’s theme for 2025, “Advancing Justice Through Reparations” we acknowledge that true justice for women in Africa requires addressing historical injustices against women and empowering vulnerable and marginalized women.
Let us work together to build an Africa where every woman and girl can thrive, lead, and inspire future generations.
