{"id":914,"date":"2017-03-02T12:42:59","date_gmt":"2017-03-02T09:42:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.african-court.org\/wpafc\/?p=914"},"modified":"2025-05-28T12:12:57","modified_gmt":"2025-05-28T09:12:57","slug":"african-court-on-human-and-peoples-rights-begins-44th-ordinary-session-on-6-march-2017-two-new-judges-to-be-sworn-in","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.african-court.org\/afchpr\/african-court-on-human-and-peoples-rights-begins-44th-ordinary-session-on-6-march-2017-two-new-judges-to-be-sworn-in\/","title":{"rendered":"AFRICAN COURT ON HUMAN AND PEOPLES\u2019 RIGHTS BEGINS 44TH ORDINARY SESSION ON 6 MARCH 2017 \u2013TWO NEW JUDGES TO BE SWORN-IN"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Arusha, 2 March, 2017: The African Court on Human and Peoples\u2019 Rights (AfCHPR) will hold its 44th Ordinary Session from 6- 24 March 2016 at its seat in Arusha, the United Republic of Tanzania.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Judges, among others, will examine about 80 applications and four Requests for Advisory Opinion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The session will also see two new Judges sworn-in. The two Judges were elected in January during the 28th Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The Judges are Hon. Justice Bensaoula Chafika from Algeria and Hon. Justice Chizumila Rose Tujilane from Malawi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The two are replacing Hon. Justice Fatsah Ouguergouz (Algeria) and Hon. Justice Duncan Tambala (Malawi) whose term came to an end on 5 September, 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The two join their colleagues Hon. Lady-Justice Ntyam Ondo Mengue from Cameroon and Hon. Lady-Justice Marie Th\u00e9r\u00e8se Mukamulisa from Rwanda who were elected to the Court during the 27th AU Summit in October, Kigali, Rwanda. The fifth female Judge already at the Court is Hon.Lady Justice Solomy Balungi Bossa who was elected in June 2014.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the first time in the history of the Court, there will be five female judges sitting on the 11-member court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The increased number of female Judges is the fulfilment of the requirement for adequate gender representation provided for in Article 12(2) and Article 14(3) of the Protocol establishing the court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Court\u2019s Judges are elected for a term of six-years and renewable once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The swearing-in of the two new Judges will be held at the Kibo Hall at the African Court premises at the Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA) building, Burka area, along Dodoma Road, on 6 March 2017 from 10 am and members of the public are welcomed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the session there will be two public hearings in the Application 003\/2014 of Victoire Umuhoza Ingabire v Republic of Rwanda on 16 March and Application 012\/2015 of Anudo Ochieng Anudo v United Republic of Tanzania on 17 March.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The swearing-in ceremony and the public hearings will be live streamed via the link\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/original.livestream.com\/afchpr\/\">http:\/\/original.livestream.com\/afchpr\/<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>NOTES FOR EDITORS:<\/strong><br>1. The Court is composed of eleven Judges, nationals of Member States of the African Union elected in their individual capacity.<br>2.
