{"id":849,"date":"2018-01-29T14:06:30","date_gmt":"2018-01-29T11:06:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.african-court.org\/wpafc\/?p=849"},"modified":"2020-04-27T14:09:45","modified_gmt":"2020-04-27T11:09:45","slug":"african-court-on-human-and-peoples-rights-organises-sensitisation-seminar-to-the-sahrawi-arab-democratic-republic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.african-court.org\/afchpr\/african-court-on-human-and-peoples-rights-organises-sensitisation-seminar-to-the-sahrawi-arab-democratic-republic\/","title":{"rendered":"AFRICAN COURT ON HUMAN AND PEOPLES\u2019 RIGHTS ORGANISES SENSITISATION SEMINAR TO THE SAHRAWI ARAB DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Arusha, 29 January 2018: The African Court on Human and Peoples\u2019 Rights (AfCHPR) will undertake a sensitisation mission to the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) from 5 to 7 February, 2018.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sensitisation mission is part of the on-going efforts of the Court to interact with different stakeholders in order to deepen their understanding of the Court\u2019s mission and importance and to encourage States to ratify the Protocol establishing the AfCHPR and deposit the declaration under Article 34(6), which allows direct access to the Court by NGOs and individuals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The main objective of the visit is to encourage SADR, which has already ratified the Protocol, to deposit the declaration required under Article 34(6) of the Protocol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So far, 30 out of 55 African Union (AU) Member States have ratified the Protocol and only 8 of them have deposited the declaration recognising the competence of the Court to receive cases from NGOs and individuals. These 8 States are: Benin, Burkina Faso, C\u00f4te d\u2019Ivoire, Ghana, Malawi, Mali, Tanzania and Tunisia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the three-day mission, the Court delegation composed of three Judges and Registry\u00a0 Staff, will hold a seminar for human rights stakeholders in the country, and also pay courtesy calls on the SADR President and the Speaker of the National Assembly , among others.<br>The President of the AfCHPR, Hon Justice Sylvain Or\u00e9, has welcomed the SADR\u2019s invitation to conduct the sensitisation, adding that it was a step in the right direction.<br>\u00a0\u2018\u2019For the Court to achieve its objectives and further strengthen African human rights systems, a greater number of countries must ratify the Protocol and make the declaration under\u00a0 Article 34(6),\u2019\u2019 he stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00a0<strong>NOTES FOR EDITORS:<\/strong><br>1.\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0The AfCHPR was established by virtue of Article 1 of the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples&#8217; Rights on the Establishment of an African Court on Human and Peoples&#8217; Rights, to complement the protective mandate of the African Commission on Human and Peoples\u2019 Rights, with a view to enhancing the protection of human rights on the continent. \u00a0<br>2.\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 The success of the Court as a human rights protection mechanism requires a wider ratification of the Protocol by Member States, as well as their acceptance of the competence of the Court, by making the declaration under Article 34(6). This \u201cuniversal\u201d ratification will give the Court the legitimacy it needs to effectively discharge its mandate.<br>3.\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0Since December 2010, the Court has carried out continent-wide promotion programmes which have so far seen it undertake 28 sensitisation visits and held 12 regional, continental seminars and conferences.<br>4.\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0The main objective of the sensitisation visits is to enhance the protection of human rights in Africa.
