Arusha, 27 May 2021<\/em><\/strong>: <\/em>The African Court on Human and Peoples\u2019 Rights (AfCHPR) will begin its 61st Ordinary Session on Monday, 31 May 2021, at its Seat in Arusha, the United Republic of Tanzania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Session will begin with the swearing-in of two Judges elected during the 34th African Union Heads of State and Government Ordinary Summit in February 2021. They are: Hon Justice Dumisa Buhle Ntsebeza SC from the Republic of South Africa and Hon Justice Sacko Modibo from the Republic of Mali.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the same Summit, Hon Justice Rafa\u00e2 Ben Achour from the Republic of Tunisia and Hon Lady-Justice Imani Daud Aboud from the United Republic of Tanzania were re-elected for a second and final term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the session, the Court will also elect new Bureau \u2013 President and Vice President \u2013  for the next two years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Judges, among others, will examine a number of applications during the four-week session that will end on 25 June, 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Session will also formally launch its 2021-2025 Strategic Plan on 1 June 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As part of the Court\u2019s 15th<\/sup> Anniversary, the Court has organised a virtual Judicial Retreat of Judges from 2-4 June 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

NOTES FOR EDITORS:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. The newly elected Justices are replacing Hon Justice Or\u00e9 from of C\u00f4te d\u2019Ivoire (2010-2021) and Hon Justice Justice \u00c2ngelo Vasco Matusse from the Republic of Mozambique (2014-2021).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Justice Ntsebeza practices as an advocate and holds Chambers in Sandton, Johannesburg, as a Group Leader of the Sandton Chapter of the Pan African Bar Association of South Africa [PABASA]. Ntsebeza is a qualified and an accredited Arbitrator and Commercial Mediator, among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Justice Modibo is an Expert in the Prosecution and Repression of Human Rights Violations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He is also Expert in International Human Rights Law, among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. The Court is composed of eleven Judges, nationals of Member States of the African Union elected in their individual capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. The Court meets four times a year in Ordinary Sessions and may hold Extra-Ordinary Sessions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
