It complements and reinforces the functions of the African Commission on Human and Peoples\u2019 Rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Court was established by pursuant to Article 1 of the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples\u2019 Rights on the Establishment of an African Court on Human and Peoples\u2019 Rights, (the Protocol) which was adopted by Member States of the then Organization of African Unity (OAU) in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, in June 1998. The Protocol came into force on 25 January 2004.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. The Inter-American Court of Human Rights is one of two bodies established by the Organization of American States to monitor human rights in the Americas. The Court was created by Article 33b of the American Convention on Human Rights to safeguard the rights enshrined in the Convention.
