The Vice President of the African Court on Human and Peoples\u2019 Rights, Hon. Lady Justice Chafika Bensaoula, On Sunday, 3 May 2026, delivered a Public Lecture at the Institut National d\u2019Etudes de Strat\u00e9gie Globale (INESG), as part of the Court\u2019s ongoing activities commemorating 20 years of protecting human and peoples\u2019 rights in Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Lecture took place in the context of a high-level discussion on the restitution of cultural property and reparations for historical injustices, bringing together researchers, jurists, diplomats and institutional leaders to reflect on memory, justice, legal accountability and the protection of Africa\u2019s cultural heritage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking at the evemt, Justice Bensaoula highlighted the continental relevance of the debate, particularly following the African Union\u2019s 2025 theme on justice for Africans and people of African descent through reparations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She underscored the importance of legal and institutional mechanisms in addressing historical injustices, strengthening African positions and advancing the rights of African peoples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The engagement also formed part of the Court\u2019s broader African Court Anniversary outreach initiatives, which seek to promote dialogue, deepen public understanding of the African human rights system and reflect on the Court\u2019s continuing role in advancing justice and human rights across the continent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As part of these anniversary activities, Judges of the Court are delivering Public Lectures in universities and institutions across African Union Member States to engage directly with academia, policymakers, legal practitioners and the wider public on the mandate and work of the Court.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
