{"id":22232,"date":"2025-08-28T15:43:45","date_gmt":"2025-08-28T12:43:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.african-court.org\/wpafc\/?p=18988"},"modified":"2025-09-08T20:49:54","modified_gmt":"2025-09-08T17:49:54","slug":"african-court-to-host-conference-on-enhancing-womens-engagement-with-its-procedures","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.african-court.org\/afchpr\/african-court-to-host-conference-on-enhancing-womens-engagement-with-its-procedures\/","title":{"rendered":"African Court on Human and Peoples\u2019 Rights to host conference on enhancing Women\u2019s engagement with its Procedures, 3-4 September 2025"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Arusha, 25 August 2025:<\/em><\/strong> During its 78<sup>th<\/sup> Ordinary Session (<strong>1 to 26 September 2025), <\/strong>the African Court on Human and Peoples\u2019 Rights (AfCHPR) will host a high-level Conference on <em>\u201cEnhancing Women\u2019s Engagement with the Procedures of the African Court\u201d<\/em> from <strong>3 to 4 September 2025,<\/strong> at its Seat in Arusha, United Republic of Tanzania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The two-day Conference will bring together a diverse group of stakeholders, including counsel on the Court\u2019s Roster under the Court\u2019s Legal Aid Scheme, Civil Society Organisations and NGOs focusing on gender and women\u2019s rights. The conference will also feature, gender equality experts and AU organs with a human rights mandate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The overall objective of the Conference is to strengthen the knowledge and skills of the aforementioned stakeholders on the Court\u2019s procedures and jurisprudence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Furthermore, the Conference is designed to address some of the barriers that limit the stakeholders\u2019 engagement with the Court. The barriers include: lack of awareness, and under-representation in the legal profession. Beyond, addressing the said barriers, the conference will also foster networking and partnership building among the participants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Conference builds on the outcomes of the Judicial Seminar held in February 2025 under the theme <em>\u201cAdvancing Justice for Women Through Reparations\u201d<\/em>, as part of the events for the Opening of the 2025 Judicial Year of the Court together with the 76<sup>th<\/sup> Ordinary Session of the Court. That Judicial Seminar underscored the need to, among others, enhance awareness on the Court\u2019s procedures and jurisprudence and enhance support for greater representation of indigent applicants through the Court\u2019s Legal Aid Scheme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The President of the Court, Honourable Justice Modibo Sacko, in his remarks preceding the conference, underlined its importance not only for advancing women\u2019s participation, but also for strengthening human rights protection more broadly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWomen are at the centre of Africa\u2019s social fabric, yet they face structural barriers in seeking justice.
