Arusha, 22 May 2025<\/em><\/strong>:<\/strong> The African Court on Human & Peoples\u2019 Rights (the Court\/AfCHPR) will convene for its 77th<\/sup> Ordinary Session, with a series of events scheduled for the 2, 3, 4 and 26 June 2025<\/strong>, at the seat of the Court in Arusha, United Republic of Tanzania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Monday, 2 June 2025<\/strong>, the Court will hold elections for the new Bureau, during which Judges will elect a new President and Vice President to succeed Hon. Lady Justice Imani Daud Aboud of Tanzania and Hon. Justice Modibo Sacko of Mali, whose respective terms as President and Vice President conclude on that day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Monday 2 <\/strong>and Tuesday 3 June 2025<\/strong>, the Court will hold a joint retreat with the African Commission on Human and Peoples\u2019 Rights (ACHPR) to discuss complementarity between the two institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Wednesday 4 June 2025<\/strong>, the Court will hold a Public Hearing in the matter of African Commission on Human and Peoples\u2019 Rights <\/em>v Republic of Kenya<\/em>, (Application No. 006\/2012) commonly known as the Ogiek case. On 12 November 2025, the Court set a three-month deadline for the Republic of Kenya to file a report outlining the measures and steps taken to comply with its earlier judgment in the case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Thursday 26June 2025<\/strong>, the Court will deliver seven (7) decisions adopted during its 76th<\/sup> and 77th<\/sup> Ordinary Sessions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The public hearing and delivery of decisions are open to members of the general public, either on-site at the seat of the Court in Arusha, Tanzania or virtually via the following links:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. The African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights (AfCHPR) is a continental court established by African countries to ensure the protection of human and peoples’ rights in Africa. The Court is an organ of the African Union and it complements and reinforces the functions of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. The Court is composed of eleven Judges, nationals of Member States of the African Union elected in their individual capacity. The Court meets four times a year in Ordinary Sessions and may hold Extra-Ordinary Sessions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. The Court\u2019s mandate includes hearing cases and disputes concerning the interpretation and application of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, as well as any other human rights instrument ratified by the concerned States.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
