Arusha, 2 September 2024<\/em><\/strong>:<\/strong> The African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights has formally inducted Honourable Justice Duncan Gaswaga as a Judge of the Court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Honourable Justice Gaswaga was elected as Judge of the Court on 19 July 2024 in Accra -Ghana during the forty-fifth (45th<\/sup>) Ordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The swearing-in ceremony took place on Monday 2 September 2024 at the seat of the Court in Arusha, Tanzania, at the commencement of the 74th<\/sup> Ordinary Session of the Court which will run from 2-27 September 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

President of the African Court Honourable Lady Justice Imani Daud Aboud welcomed Justice Gaswaga, noting that his extensive judicial and legal expertise and dedication to human rights makes him a valuable addition to the Bench thereby strengthening the Court’s capacity to fulfil its mandate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are confident that his contributions will greatly enhance the Court’s ability to deliver justice and protect the rights of all African citizens,\u201d said Lady Justice Aboud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his remarks after the ceremony, Justice Gaswaga expressed his deep honour and commitment to serve on the African Court and highlighted the critical role of the Court in safeguarding the rights of African citizens and promoting justice on the African continent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI am deeply humbled by this appointment and pledge to contribute to the African Court’s mission of upholding justice and human rights for all,\u201d said Justice Gaswaga.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. The African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights (AfCHPR) is a continental court established by African Union Member States to ensure the protection of human and peoples’ rights in Africa. It is based in Arusha, Tanzania.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. The Court is an organ of the African Union and it complements and reinforces the functions of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights which is based in Banjul, the Gambia.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. The Court is composed of eleven Judges, nationals of Member States of the African Union elected in their individual capacity. The Court meets four times a year in Ordinary Sessions and may hold Extra-Ordinary Sessions.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n
