Arusha, 20 June 2023<\/em><\/strong>: <\/strong>A delegation from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Court of Justice, led by its President, Hon. Justice Edward Amoako Asante, will make  a four-day working visit to the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights from 21 to 24 June 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The visit aims to strengthen cooperation between the two courts, building upon the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in March 2018 in Arusha.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This visit follows a reciprocal visit made by the African Court to the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice in April 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The President of the African Court, Hon. Lady Justice Imani Daud Aboud, stated that the objectives of the visit include enhancing cooperation at both the operational and judicial levels of the two courts. “The visit is crucial in deepening the effectiveness of the signed MoU and strengthening our cooperation in judicial matters,” added Justice Imani.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the visit, the two courts will also renew the MoU for another three years, solidifying their commitment to collaboration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. The African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights (AfCHPR) was established in accordance with Article 1 of the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights on the Establishment of an African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights. The Court complements the protective mandate of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights and aims to enhance the protection of human rights on the African continent.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. The ECOWAS Court of Justice is an organ of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), a regional integration community consisting of 15 member states in West Africa. While ECOWAS was founded in 1975 by the Treaty of Lagos, the Court of Justice was established in 1991 through the adoption of the Protocol on the Community Court of Justice. The Court of Justice is an institution of ECOWAS as outlined in the ECOWAS Revised Treaty of 1993. The Protocol has been amended twice, in 2005 and 2006, with the 2005 Supplementary Protocol expanding the Court’s jurisdiction to include human rights claims by individuals.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n
