I.          BACKGROUND<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights (AFCtHPR) was established by the 1998 Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights on the Establishment of an African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights (the Protocol). The Protocol entered into force on 25 January 2004, paving the way for the establishment of the AFCtHPR. It is the continent’s first judicial body responsible for the protection of human and peoples\u2019 rights on the continent. The Court\u2019s main mandate is to complement the protective mandate of the Banjul-based African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (the Commission). The seat of the Court is in Arusha, United Republic of Tanzania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

II.<\/strong>         OBJECTIVE<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In order to update its database, the Court is calling for applications from qualified freelance interpreters in Arabic, English, French, Portuguese, Spanish and Swahili who are nationals of African Union member countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

III.        SCOPE<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Freelance interpreters are invited to express interest in providing online and face-to-face services (e.g., during sessions and other meetings of the Court). They will be awarded contracts to provide interpretation services at meetings organised by the Court\u2019s Registry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

IV.       MAIN TASKS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Freelance interpreters provide quality simultaneous or consecutive interpretation services, as required, at sessions and meetings organised by the Court using mainstream terminology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

V.        REQUIREMENTS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • A Master’s degree in Interpretation, Humanities and Languages or any other related field and a minimum of five (5) years\u2019 experience as an interpreter, preferably in an international organisation. A higher qualification in the relevant field will be an added advantage.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    Or<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    • A Bachelor’s degree in Interpretation, Humanities and Languages or any other related field and have a minimum of seven (7) years\u2019 experience as an interpreter, preferably in an international organisation.<\/li>
    • Experience in the work of the Court and other international and\/or domestic courts is an added advantage.<\/li>
    • A legal background or knowledge of legal terminology is an added advantage.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      VI.       REQUIRED SKILLS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      • Ability to work in-situ<\/em> or online.
        • Ability to work under pressure at short notice.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

          VII.      DURATION OF THE CONSULTANCY<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

          A three (3) year renewable framework contract will be offered to successful candidates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          VIII.     REMUNERATION  <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

          • Online interpretation (sessions and other meetings):<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

            USD 468 per day.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

            • In-situ<\/em><\/strong> interpretation (sessions and other meetings)<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

              USD 468<\/strong> per day + daily per diem<\/strong> of the place of assignment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

              The Court will cover travel costs for in-situ<\/em> contracts in compliance with AU travel policy (one economy class return air ticket).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

              All payments will be made in compliance with African Union rules and procedures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

              The Court reserves the right to change the above fees at any time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

              IX.       EVALUATION CRITERIA<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

              • Academic background (30%)
                • Professional experience (45%)<\/li><\/ul>
                  • Language combination (15%)<\/li><\/ul>
