Second joint meeting of the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights and the Court: the two organs finally harmonised their interim rules of procedure

The African Commission on Human and People’s Rights and the African Court on Human and People’s Rights held their second joint meeting in Dakar, Senegal from 12th to 16th October 2009 with a view to harmonising their respective rules of procedure.

At the end of this second joint meeting, which took place after the first meeting held in Arusha, Tanzania, from 14th to 17th July 2009, the two organs finally harmonised their interim rules of procedure and in particular points relating to their complementarity, consultation between the Court and the Commission, the advisory opinion, seizure of the Court by the Commission, admissibility, representation of the Commission before the Court and points relating to content of the application and the transfer of procedure to the case file to the Court by the Commission.

During the closing ceremony, the President of the African Court on Human and People’s Rights and the Interim Chairperson of the Commission declared that the provisions on which the two institutions have agreed will be included in their respective rules of procedure making them more efficient in the protection and promotion of human rights in Africa.
