AFRICAN COURT ON HUMAN AND PEOPLES’ RIGHTS TO HEAR TWO APPLICATIONS NEXT WEEK

Arusha, 15 March, 2018: The African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights (AfCHPR) will hear two applications separately beginning Monday, 19 March 2018, at its seat in Arusha, the United Republic of Tanzania.

The applications are:

(i) Application 013/2015 –Robert John Pennesis v. United Republic of Tanzania (from 19 to 20 March, 2018)

(ii) Application 001/2015—Armand Guehi v. United Republic of Tanzania (22 March, 2018)

 

In his application, Mr Pennesis is claiming that he is a Tanzanian citizen and has been illegally detained in Tanzania prison for illegal presence which is contrary to the Tanzania Constitution, the Protocol 1 to the Geneva Convention (Rule 59.1) and the Geneva Convention (Rules 1 to 4).  In the second application, Mr Guehi, an Ivorian national, who has been convicted and sentenced to death for murdering his wife, is challenging the conviction on the ground that it violated his right to a fair trial. Case Summary click here

1. The Court is composed of eleven Judges, nationals of Member States of the African Union elected in their individual capacity. 

2. The Court meets four times a year in Ordinary Sessions and may hold Extra-Ordinary Sessions.
