AFCHPR / GTZ:

Within the framework of cooperation ties between our two institutions, the African Court on Human and People’s Rights, on Monday September 28, 2009 received an official delegation from the GTZ at its headquarters in Arusha, Tanzania.

The German delegation made up of Mme. Cornelie Richter, Director General of the Department of Research and Development, Mr Andreas Proksch, Director General of the Africa Department, Mr Dverken, Director of the GTZ bureau in Dar-Es-Salam, Tanzania and Dr Markus Loffelmann, Director of the GTZ project (Capacity building of the African Court on Human and People’s Rights) was received by the Registrar a.i. Mme Egue Eliane Adote and the entire personnel of the court.

During the visit, Mme Egue Eliane Adote thanked the GTZ, an active partner of the Court, for its support and continuous efforts aimed at strengthening the capacity building of the Court. She further underlined the strategic importance of this partnership and its contribution to different activities of the Court.

At the end of deliberations which followed presentations made by Heads of the Legal Department, Human Resources Department, the library/documentation and the Information Communication and Technology Unit, the members of the GTZ delegation expressed satisfaction with the work done so far and expressed the will to strengthen the cooperation ties and make them even more efficient.

It is worthy of note that the Director General of the Africa Department called for an enhancement of the Court’s external policy to ensure that the court’s  jurisdiction is recognized by all member States of the African Union.

It should be recalled at this juncture that only 25 Countries have so far ratified the protocol on the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights which led to the creation of an African Court on Human and People’s Rights and only 2 countries, Burkina Faso and Malawi have completed formalities relating to the signing of the declaration which recognizes the jurisdiction of the Court as contained in Art. 34 (6) of the Protocol.
